In the year seventh century the Great Wall protected the Qin Dynasty from the wei. The Qin, Zhao, Yan Dynasties for years used the wall for protection against the Northern Barbarians. The estimated length of the Great Wall of China is around 3100 miles. There were over 1 million laborers that helped construct the Great Wall and as many as 300000 of those laborers died during the construction. Many of those 300,000 were buried into the wall itself.
In 221 BC, six states were absorbed by Emperor Qin set up the first unified kingdom. To stay protected from the Huns of the North, Emperor Qin ordered all of the existing walls to be constructed to be connected to each other. Emporer Qin needed people to work on the wall. He even used scholars and people that were considered unproductive. Qin put together armies to defend his Northern boundaries. Qin's Great Wall started in Laioning Province and ended in Gaunsu Province, which is 544 miles apart.
In the western Han Dynasty, the Huns became more powerful. In order to consolidate the frontier, the Hans court built their walls on a lager scale. In the west, the Yangguan pass was built along the Hexi Corridor. Shanxi Niangziguan pass and Yangguan pass where built in the North. The Silk Road was built along the Hans wall and many other sections were extended to Yinshan Mountains. The Han's boundaries stretch 621 miles.
The peak of the wall was created by the Ming Dynasty. The Dadan, Tufan, and Nuzhen were minority tribes that created a lot of disturbance for the Ming Dynasty. Most of the Mings wall was created in the North. In addtion, to adding more miles to the wall the Ming Dynasty also multi-lined the walls. Muli-lined walls are walls with several layers.
